The knit tie is the least represented tie in my wardrobe simply because I find it the most informal and use it only when I want a tie to wear with a tweed sport coat. Prior to this purchase my knit ties are from Tom Ford. At more than twice the price the TF ties have neither better material nor craftsmanship. The most distinguishing feature of the Fort Belvedere tie is that I find myself wearing it with my finest suits as opposed to the more causal look I have associated with the knit tie in the past. Highly recommended. I will be purchasing more in the near future.

Product Info

How You Can Style This Silk Knit Tie

This tie's bold orange-red hue, combined with its unique mottled texture, makes it a standout accessory that can elevate both formal and business-casual outfits. For a polished look, pair the tie with a crisp white or light blue dress shirt, which will allow the tie's rich color to take center stage.

Complement this combination with a navy or charcoal grey suit, which balances the tie's vibrant tones and creates a cohesive, professional appearance.

For a more relaxed yet stylish ensemble, consider pairing the mottled knit tie with a light grey or beige blazer. This combination works particularly well for daytime events or casual gatherings, where the lighter jacket color will enhance the tie's vibrant orange-red tones. Add a pair of dark grey or navy chinos or trousers to maintain a balanced color palette.

To complete the look, opt for brown leather shoes and a matching belt, ensuring a harmonious and well-coordinated outfit. For an added touch of sophistication, consider accessorizing with a pocket square that incorporates complementary colors or subtle patterns.

How to Wear Silk Knit Ties

Knit ties, with their unique textured fabric, offer a delightful twist to the classic style narrative. They bridge the gap between casual charm and formal elegance, making them a versatile accessory for any gentleman's wardrobe. Unlike their solid counterparts, knit ties provide a subtle nod to sartorial flair without demanding center stage, allowing for a sophisticated yet understated look.

The unique texture of a silk knit tie adds a tactile dimension to your attire. It lends a depth and character that standard smooth ties cannot match, creating an interplay of light and shadow that’s both distinctive and stylish.

Because the yarns in this tie are mottled, you are offered even more opportunities to develop color combinations and effects than you would have with a conventional multi-tone tie. Each color blends into and out of the other, creating gradients that impart a subtle nuance onto every look.

Please Note: Because this tie was knitted flat and shaped on a wooden mold, a small amount of size contraction takes place immediately after the tie is removed from the mold. As the fabric relaxes over time, the width and length of the tie will increase slightly. Keep in mind that as a handmade product, all stated dimensions are approximate and actual dimensions will vary slightly.

As a general rule, our ties have a length tolerance of 1.5" - 4 cm

Impeccable Materials

The story of this silk knit tie begins with the finest Swiss silk, custom-spun and dyed in a historic mill to achieve its distinctive sheen and depth. This exclusive yarn is then carefully knitted in a European workshop using an artisanal flat-knitting machine that has been in continuous service for generations. Its rhythm and precision produce a weave that is dense yet pliant, crisp yet inviting; a tactile expression of true craftsmanship.

Artisanal Craft Techniques

Unlike common tubular knits, each tie is shaped by hand to achieve a clean, elegant drape. The central stitching adds subtle structure and ensures that the tie keeps its refined lines over years of wear. Finally, it rests on traditional wooden molds for days, allowing the silk to settle naturally into its ideal form: a quiet detail that defines true luxury.

Totally Unique

Slight variations in shape are not imperfections but the individual signature of human hands at work, reminding you that each piece is one-of-a-kind, as an heirloom in the making, ready to bring timeless sophistication to every occasion.

Cleaning

Do not attempt to wash this silk knit tie. If you notice a stain, we strongly suggest that you have the tie dry cleaned.

If you wish to attempt a spot-cleaning at home, do so using the following procedure at your own risk.

  1. Gently blot any excess liquid from the stain with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub, as this can damage the silk fibers.
  2. Fill a small bowl with lukewarm water and add a few drops of mild detergent.
  3. Dip a clean, white cloth into the soapy water and wring out excess moisture. Dab the stain gently with the damp cloth.
  4. Moisten another clean cloth with plain lukewarm water and dab the tie to remove soap residue.
  5. Pat the cleaned area with a dry cloth. Then, lay the tie flat on a towel to air dry completely.

Storage

  • To prevent heavy creasing, never store your neck wear tied or knotted.
  • Undo the knot and then roll the necktie up in a firm but not excessively tight coil.
  • Allow it to sit in the coil for about a day to relax wrinkles.
  • To reduce stretching, knit ties should be stored rolled or flat.

What makes this mottled silk Fort Belvedere tie special?

Knit ties were popular throughout the Golden Age of Menswear as a distinctive, visually interesting example of neckwear. Many of the finest were made with a stiffer silk sometimes referred to as "crunchy." This is the iconic cri de la soie silk, or “cry of the silk,” so named because of the unique sound that this fabric makes when rubbed against itself.

Fort Belvedere has sourced only the finest silk for these ties. We're proud to offer a classic, casual knit tie that is produced using traditional methods that we know will be a versatile addition to your wardrobe!

Details & Specs

  • Cri de la Soie Fabric

"Cri de la soie" is a French term that translates to "the cry of silk." It refers to the distinctive, gentle rustling sound that certain high-quality silk fabrics make when they are moved or worn. This characteristic sound is often associated with luxury and elegance, evoking images of opulent fashion and timeless sophistication. The cri de la soie is not just an auditory experience but also a hallmark of fine craftsmanship, reminding us that true quality speaks to all the senses.

  • Shimmering Mottled Pattern

A mottled pattern not only allows you to introduce more colors into your tie, it allows you to do so in the most subtle and nuanced way possible. Each delicate yarn transitions through various phases of color for a unique and totally unexpected effect that will make your entire ensemble unforgettable.

  • Shaped on Wooden Molds

To achieve the perfect shape, our knit ties are individually applied to wooden molds and then set for several days. This traditional method imparts the ideal form to our ties.

  • Old-World Swiss Silk Yarn

To create this one-of-a-kind tie, we needed one-of-a-kind yarn. We found exactly what we were looking for in a little silk mill in the Swiss Alps, where our silk yarn is custom spun and dyed for a look you won’t find anywhere else.

  • Flat Knitted

Most other knit ties are round-knitted, but the yarns for our knit ties are flat-knitted in a painstaking process that requires the workmanship of skilled artisans, but that also produces a superior tie.

  • Heritage Knitting Machines

The wool for Fort Belvedere’s knit ties was made on a heritage knitting machine that is over 70 years old and represents the apex of Old World craftsmanship.

  • Attentive Oversight

From the moment that our knit ties are first spun until the tops and bottoms are sewn shut and the labels are attached, quality inspectors ensure that every article is made according to the exacting standards of the Fort Belvedere name.
